Art and Design

Intent

 

At Little Kingshill Combined School, Art and Design provides pupils with the skills, concepts and knowledge necessary for them to express responses to ideas and experiences in a visual or tactile form. It fires their imagination and is a fundamental means of personal expression.

We aim to fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum for Art and Design by providing a broad and balanced curriculum, ensuring the progressive development of knowledge and skills, develop a cross-curricular approach to the use of Art and Design in all subjects and promote a love and enthusiasm for Art and Design.

The aims of teaching Art and Design in our school are:

  • To engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.
  • As pupils progress through school, they should begin to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of Art and Design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
  • To produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
  • To become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • To evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
  • To know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

 

Implementation

 

To ensure high standards of teaching and learning in Art and Design, at Little Kingshill Combined School we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school. Art and design is taught as part of a half-termly or termly topic, focusing on knowledge and skills stated in the National Curriculum. Cross-curricular links are promoted to allow all children to deepen their understanding across the curriculum.

Each child has a sketchbook in KS2 and each child has ownership of their sketchbook in order to foster their sense of creativity. Children use their sketchbooks to make initial sketches, develop skills, record ideas and develop opinions.

The Art and Design curriculum at Little Kingshill Combined School is based upon the 2014 Primary National Curriculum in England, which provides a broad framework and outlines the knowledge and skills and taught in each Key Stage. Teachers plan lessons for their class using  and the whole school progression map. The progression document ensures the curriculum is covered and the skills/knowledge taught is progressive from year group to year group.

When teaching art and design, teachers should follow the children’s interests to ensure their learning is engaging, broad and balanced. A variety of teaching approaches are used based on the teacher’s judgement. Throughout the Little Kingshill Combined School journey, every child is given the opportunity to learn the skills of drawing, painting, printing, sculpture and digital art through the exploration of an initial key artist, craft maker or designer and their work. 

 

Implementation for EYFS

 

Through Expressive Arts children are encouraged to explore different media, explore how media can be combined to create different effects and develop a range of skills and techniques experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function. Children are given daily access to a range of creative opportunities and enjoy our carefully planned and well-resourced creative areas both indoors and out. Children are encouraged to create on both small and large scales and our outdoor environment supports this well. Children are encouraged to develop their communication and language skills through talking about their creations and sharing these with others to build confidence and raise self-esteem.

 

Impact

 

The impact of this curriculum design will lead to outstanding progress over time across key stages relative to a child’s individual starting point and their progression of skills. Children will therefore be expected to leave Little Kingshill reaching at least age-related expectations for Art and Design.

Our Art and Design curriculum will also lead pupils to be enthusiastic Art and Design learners, evidenced in a range of ways, including whole school projects, pupil voice, their final pieces and sketchbooks.

We ensure that children who are achieving well, as well as those who need additional support, are identified, and additional provision and strategies are planned in and discussed with class teachers. Achievements are celebrated in classrooms during walking-galleries and displays, and by building in increasing connections with local galleries, we aim to develop our future artists and their appreciation of the art around them.

 

Assessment opportunities:

  • Assessing children’s understanding of topic linked vocabulary before and after the unit is taught.
  • Summative assessment of pupil discussions about their learning.
  • Images and videos of the children’s practical learning.
  • Interviewing the pupils about their learning (pupil voice).
  • Moderation staff meetings where pupil’s books are scrutinised and there is the opportunity for a dialogue between teachers to understand their class’s work.
